Lower Elementary (age 6-8)

This list has books that are best suited for children in the lower elementary grades, or ages 6 to 8 years old. Each child is different so children outside of this range may enjoy the books as well.

Children in this age range are likely to be starting to read independently. While many children learn to read in first grade, 6 or 7 years old, there is a wide range of ages when children begin to read. For the very beginning reader simple texts that practice common sounds are helpful. As children increase their reading skills the text will increase from a word or sentence per page to short chapters. The pictures in the books will also decrease as the are less reliant on images to understand the text. Although children at this age are able to read, the vocabulary in the books they read independently may be limited to accommodate their skill level. Due to this, children will still benefit from being read to, as the text can contain more complex vocabulary that they are able to understand but may not be able to independently read.
